Mette Rasmussen & Chris Corsano at 56. Ljubljana Jazz Festival at Cankarjev Dom
Mette Rasmussen, alto saxophone; Chris Corsano, drums
Mette Rasmussen is the talk of the town these days, so to speak. Danish-born and living in Trondheim, she’s a wonder girl with guts, sound and fire, maybe the lost link between Peter Brötzmann and Christine Abdelnour, if that's possible. She's been playing solo gigs and exploring more and more crossovers with musicians from all-over, as her experiences with Mats Gustafsson, Virginia Genta, Craig Taborn and John Edwards can show. Even if Chris Corsano stands out as Bjork drummer, to most people he is a first-class improviser alongside other big names, including Nels Cline, Sir Richard Bishop, Akira Sakata and Evan Parker.
As Daniel Spicer from the Wire puts it, “In revisiting the template laid down by John Coltrane and Rashied Ali on Interstellar Space, the pair pick up on a quintessential and enduring out-jazz configuration – the sax/drums duo… What stands out most on the album is the duo's use of space. There's very little in the way of gratuitous skronk – but plenty of room for Rasmussen to investigate a wide palette of voicing, from a raggedly insistent fluttering, through a softly trilling multiphonic purr, and on to high, expressive leaps into flashes of altissimo, just riding the razored edge of controlled lyricism.” Totally agreed.
